What if I hold shares of LEHMAN BROTHERS, after bankruptcy filing, shares are @ $0.18, what do I do?

In hope that talks this weekend would lead to a sale of Lehman to Bank of America or Barclays, I held (LEH) shares, Is there any way that I may have any sort of return, or hope of return, by holding on to these stocks?? My understanding is the holding company filed for chapter 11, yet Neuberger Berman, among other sections of the company still exist. Please advise.

Today being Sept 18th the stock closed at 5 cents a share on the pinksheets. I am still trying to figure out the value of Neuberger since that was not purchased by Barclays. Even though, there is probably a better chance of the stock going worthless and dropping to zero, I will hold my shares to the end rather than take the current 5 cents a share for a big loss. You need to figure out how much your loss is now if sold, versus what your loss would be if held to the end, if it goes to zero.

What is EMS and Why Should You Consider It?

EMS is the abbreviation for electronic muscle stimulation. It can be used to train muscles and it is often used as part of physical therapy to help muscles heal. In the hands of a therapist, this kind of stimulation can bring relief from pain after sports injury or surgery. The stimulators used to send electronic signals to the muscles help them to contract. When successful, the extra electric energy simulates that of the real nervous system signals and provides extra contractions for the muscles to aid their healing.

In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, regulates the stimulators. Most EMS devices are intended to be used by trained physical therapists. If you have ever had physical therapy after a sports surgery, you are likely to have experienced some time with a device attached to the surgical site to facilitate healing. The electricity is actually delivered to you via small pads attached to your skin. Your therapist is trained in the correct placement of the pads. The goal is to improve impaired muscle function by retraining muscles in several ways.

There are muscle stimulators available for sale to be used for cosmetic purposes. Even these devices must be approved by the FDA before they are allowed to reach the marketplace. You can find many companies offering devices online. The FDA approves them only after they pass rigorous testing to prove that they are safe. The devices should be used with common sense because the electrical signals they send to your muscles are capable of causing burns, shocks, skin irritations, and even pain. Some reports of interference with pacemakers and defibrillators have been reported. Some people, and children playing with the devices, have had injuries severe enough to require hospitalization.

What EMS can do when used properly at home or the gym, is temporarily improve muscle tone and strength. Many people use it to improve physical appearance. And this use has gained in popularity quite recently. It is possible to relax muscle spasms with careful use of stimulation. Some people use it to reduce muscle tension in the neck and upper back after particularly long days working on computer or in a stressful environment.

EMS is also quite popular with people suffering from arthritis pain. The stimulation helps to ease some of the pain and stiffness associated with this condition. It also helps to improve range of motion and encourages better blood flow to stiff joints.

If you have broken a bone and been in a cast for any length of time, you know that your muscles have had some atrophy associated with the process. Some doctors use EMS to help muscles retrain themselves after long periods of being immobilized by casts. This can bring better movement more quickly for patients who have been struggling within the confines of the cast.

Nursing home patients who are unable to walk or move parts of their bodies after strokes or other serious illness do find relief with electronic treatment. The treatment may be used to stimulate muscles that would otherwise stiffen up causing chronic pain. Muscles that are not being used regularly actually lose their ability to function. So it is a great benefit for the many patients who cannot exercise at all.

Chronic pain sufferers use EMS to relieve their pain. The most popular use includes relieving neck, back, or leg pain. Because it is possible to purchase devices online, anyone with chronic pain can have more frequent relief by having one in their own home. Many people report that they use their own stimulator daily to keep them more mobile. This is a great benefit because it frees them from the need for frequent appointments with health practitioners. Having a stimulator at home is a welcome substitute when insurance will not cover the costs of additional treatment. Used with care, EMS can be a successful way to improve life.

If Australia were to become a Republic, would that mean that the Australian flag would have to be changed?

If/when Australia becomes a Republic, would you support the idea of a new flag?

No it wouldn’t have to change, but it mostly likely would. South Africa had the British (and two others) Union Jack as part of its original republic flag for many years (during the apartheidt era).

Personally I don’t want to see Australia become a republic. It has nothing to do with the Queen really and everything to do with the democratic process. Australians have already stated that should we move to a republic it would be on the American model. I don’t think anyone should have the level of power that the US President has over his country. With our current system the head of state is purely ceremonial, and should the Prime Minister abuse his power then he can be safely removed through the democratic process we have now (two senate rejections on any law means fresh elections).

However I do think we need to update our flag. We need to recognise elements of our country that have not previously been recognised through our history within our national symbols. I think the Australian flag should reflect the colours of Australia through Aboriginal ochres and look at a re-design using some existing elements and removing others. I don’t have a problem removing the Union Jack. Things like the southern cross and the commonwealth star probably need to remain in some way. Changing the flag worked well for Canada and gave her a whole new identity that is recognised the world over. We could certainly do more to differentiate ourselves from our cousins across the Tasman and other countries of the South Pacific.

In a study for the U.S. Department of Energy, TV broadcasting video cameras were identified as a near-term opportunity for portable direct hydrogen PEM fuel cells. A technical comparison of PEM fuel cells and competing battery alternatives was performed for TV broadcasting video cameras. The comparison includes a lifecycle cost analysis of fuel cell and battery technologies (lithium ion and nickel cadmium) under different use scenarios for TV broadcasting video cameras. A sensitivity analysis was also performed to show the variability in average annual system cost as individual factors (e.g. cost, durability of the fuel cell) are varied while other factors are held constant. A value proposition was defined for this market based on the overall market, economic, and technology assessments.

The necessity of understanding and predicting not just initial performance but life behavior is paramount to commercialization of these power systems. A system model elucidates the interactions between components and enables the response of the system as a whole to changing load demands to be determined. This is illustrated with an example of platinum stability in a fuel-cell hybrid system.

An important goal of replacing primary batteries by hybrids of rechargeable batteries and fuel cells is to reduce the logistic effort in power supply. Fuel cells using ethanol would be beneficial as ethanol offers a higher availability and easier handling compared to methanol. However, the performance of today’s DEFCs does not compete with that of commercial DMFCs. To improve this performance two approaches are currently pursued, a multistep process in proton exchange membrane based DEFC and alkaline DEFC using anion exchange membranes. The current state of the art of both approaches will be presented and their advantages and disadvantages will be discussed.
